Today we're talking about resumes and doing some prep to get ready for our resume building in the lab tomorrow!
We're starting to talk about job seeking skills. Check out the video that we used to talk about work skills and transferrable skills.
We'll be researching 3 careers and choosing one to share with each other. I'd like you to first focus on your research. Here are the websites I would like you to use for finding out about careers:
For figuring out job demand generally: WorkBC: https://www.workbc.ca/Labour-Market-Information/Jobs-in-Demand.aspx Job Bank Canada: www.jobbank.gc.ca/occupation_search-eng.do For figuring out job demand for specific careers: You can also use the WorkBC and Yukon WorkFutures listed above and find the labour market info in specific careers. For figuring out admission requirements: You'll need to go to specific websites for schools, and look for the requirements. Sample admissions - UBC: Click here To download the research sheet, see attachment below.
Once your group is finished listening to all three podcasts, I'd like you to think about what you're still curious about. Is it driverless cars? Advances in Artificial Intelligence? If robots are actually better than humans at surgery? Whatever you might be interested in, I'd like you to pursue it!
1. Find an online article or more information from a reputable source 2. Log onto the wikispaces (I will give you a personal logon code) - CLICK HERE FOR LOGIN 3. Start a new discussion topic with your link and comments 4. Add on to other people's conversation topics and peruse their links
We're going to spend the next couple days talking about how technology is impacting our world of work. We'll be listening to the podcasts linked below and discussing them together.
First- here's the demo that we'll look at together: http://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/episode-354-miami-preps-for-irma-automating-your-job-the-safest-nfl-helmet-che-guevara-s-brother-and-more-1.4276099/automate-this-how-ai-technology-could-disrupt-nearly-half-of-all-jobs-and-international-politics-1.4276126 Your job is to listen to the podcasts, discuss with your team, and record your connections on your graphic organizer (attached at the bottom of this post). If you were away for the days we did this, feel free to do it on your own. Here are the links for your teams: For Tuesday:
For Wednesday:
I'm going to ask you to do an extension and find out something that you're curious about. Here are some links that could help you get started:
CBC has put out a bunch of stories this month about how work is changing- here's the link to them http://www.cbc.ca/radio/workshift/stories Will your job be done by a machine? A website that uses an algorithm to predict what jobs might be 'safe' and what ones might be at risk. http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/05/21/408234543/will-your-job-be-done-by-a-machine Interested in Driverless Cars? Check out this Guardian story: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/jan/15/driverless-cars-12-things-you-need-to-know
Here's the sheet to keep track of your learning (best to print it out and handwrite).
Just a heads up that our assignments will be due on OCTOBER 23! That's tons of notice. I've mentioned it in class a couple times already, just putting it up here as well. Please please see me if you need help or are missing assignments.
We're starting to think about how people choose jobs that they end up in. Here's a short slideshow that we'll look at, and then an in-class activity below.
Here's the sheet we'll be using in class together
Here are some links and the slideshow that we'll be looking at: •What is our top employer in the territory? Second? •Let’s check out yukonworkfutures •Let’s have a look at some Yukon Statistics including unemployment rates and population growth •Here’s some Canadian Statistics. How does the Yukon compare? •Let’s have a peek at the August 2017 Employment Report •What makes us different from other places? •Let’s look at BC’s Labour Market info:
We're going to start talking about the disconnect that sometimes happens between post secondary and the labour market. We'll watch Generation Jobless (a film posted below) and will take notes together, and then write a response. I'm attaching the notes sheet and response sheet too. We'll talk about the different generations- here's the link for that. http://socialmarketing.org/archives/generations-xy-z-and-the-others/ Link for generation jobless on the CBC site: http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/episodes/generation-jobless You can download this sheet and type into it if you prefer:
Here's a complete copy of the notes if you would like it (there's much more in the documentary, but this will help you remember).
